Infoday at Park of Coastal Dunes to present LASPEH Project
Overview

On Saturday 22nd June 2019, the Regional Natural Park “Coastal Dunes from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo" organized an Infoday about LASPEH project entitled "Grazing - Millennial heritage to safeguard" at Masseria Fontenuova, located within the Park in Ostuni. 

Initially, after the welcome greetings of the Director of the Park Federico Ciraci, the project LASPEH and its actions was presented.

Following, the intervention of the special guest of the event Carolina Leonardi, a young Tuscan breeder and cheesemaker who told about her experience and the reality of the Versilia territory and the Park of Alpi Apuane, where she currently lives and works. At the age of 23, during her studies in Agriculture at the University of Pisa, with a strong passion for environment and animals and a lot of courage, she decided to recover 40 sheep of the "massese" breed from an old farmer in her city, guided by the awareness that preserving the tradition of the “massese” breed is fundamental to guarantee the maintenance of the landscape, its ecosystems and its animal and plant species.

All the guests walked through the Park together with the sheep of “moscia leccese” breed, to discover the biodiversity preserved in this habitat, thanks to the expert of plants Felice Tanzarella and the ornithologist Pietro Chiatante.

Finally, the participants enjoyed the sunset in the splendid location of the Park and tasted the cheese and other dairy products of Masseria Fontenuova.

During the event, many topics were highlighted, including the link between sheep breeding and the conservation of natural habitats and the production of "yellowish" milk, with high nutritional properties, due to the presence in the park of spontaneous essences. Apulian farmers and breeders  shared their experiences with the special guest Carolina Leonardi and all the participants, in view of the common dream of preserving the heritage and biodiversity of the planet.

The event was organized in collaboration of Slow Food "Piana degli Ulivi" and the Slow Food Youth Network - Piana degli Ulivi.
