Sheep in the Dune Costiere Park

The importance of yellow milk and biodiversity
Overview

The quality of milk often depends on the areas where flocks graze. The herbal connoisseur Felice Tanzarella, surrounded by the biodiversity of Masseria Fontenuova in Ostuni during the Info Day of LASPEH project on 22 June 2019, tells how wild herbs contribute to enrich the "yellowish milk" typical of grazing in the wild.

As a matter of fact, flocks grazing freely in these pastures assume all the natural elements present in the area, which give then a particular “yellowish” colouring to their milk. As a result, milk is rich in beta-carotene, one of the vegetal pigments precursors of Vitamine A, very important from a nutritional point of view for both children and adult.

Therefore, biodiversity is at the base of human existence and to preserve it is a duty of everyone in order to keep the ecosystem balance that allow every living being to survive in the best possible way. The yellow milk represents an effect of this essential combination.

The Regional Park of Coastal Dunes, lead partner of LASPEH project, organized its Info Day of on 22nd June 2019 at Masseria Fontenuova (Ostuni). The event consisted in a walk with moscia leccese breed sheep to the discovery of the park biodiversity, accompanied by the herbal connoisseur Felice Tanzarella and the ornithologist Pietro Chiatante. Special guest was Carolina Leonardi, a young Tuscan breeder who recovered “massese”, a sheep breed at risk.
